Bond and Volunteer Duty
All members are required to pay a $50 bond. This bond is refundable upon leaving the toy library provided duty obligations are fulfilled and all toys are returned intact (no duty is required for a 3-month casual membership).
To be eligible for a refund, members must complete five duties per year: one per quarter in the toy library, plus one duty at a special event (such as stocktake, fundraising or promotional events). Members may choose a date and time that suits them for duty and must register on the roster on BH@TL Connect. Members who do not register will have their name automatically assigned to a borrowing session.
Duty involves arriving 10 minutes early to assist in setting up (unpacking the toys and setting up tables), assisting with returning toys during the session, then helping pack up at the end of the borrowing session.
If a member does not complete their duty requirements, the bond will not be refunded upon departure from the toy library. Bonds will be refunded at the discretion of the Box Hill Area Toy Library committee.
Looking after our toys
As well as completing duties, members are asked to return all toys in a clean and intact state. Toys should be wiped with a wet cloth and mild cleaner (Spray and Wipe or similar) before being returned. Costumes and soft toys should be washed inside out (where appropriate) by hand or on a delicate cycle. If a toy code has rubbed off, please rewrite using a permanent marker before returning.
When returning toys, please get them checked by the duty volunteers and then take the time to put toys back on the shelves in the correct location.
If you borrow a toy and notice the toy, or a part of it, is damaged, missing or not functioning as it should, please use our website to lodge a report within 48 hours of borrowing the toy. Reports lodged outside of the 48hrs window will not be accepted and the member will be held responsible and fines applicable.
Safety
Members are responsible for ensuring the toys they borrow are appropriate for their child’s stage of development and are used in a safe manner. This also includes abiding by Victorian law with regards to bicycle helmets which must be worn by all children when riding bicycles or scooters. Helmets are a member’s responsibility; we do not provide safety helmets for hygiene reasons.
Loss and Breakage
Toys are checked by volunteers on return. If pieces are identified as missing or broken that were not previously recorded, these are the responsibility of the borrowing member.
If a member loses a piece of a toy, they will be asked to re-borrow the toy in an effort to locate the piece. If the piece is still not found, the member will be charged a fine which can be refunded upon the return of the piece.
Fines for lost or broken toys are - $5 per piece.
If missing or broken pieces leave a toy unusable, the session coordinator will remove the toy from the library. Efforts will be made by the Box Hill Area Toy Library committee to replace or repair pieces.
Where missing or broken pieces are not available or are very costly, the Box Hill Area Toy Library committee has the right to determine the fine or replacement cost, which will be charged to the borrowing member.
Members will generally have to pay the full toy replacement cost where:
- Toys are less than one year old and are returned in a state that leaves them unusable.
- A piece of a puzzle is missing or broken leaving the puzzle unusable. The final replacement cost for puzzles will be determined by the Box Hill Area Toy Library committee based on the age and initial cost of the puzzle.
